Recent Work: Mixed Medium Collages, 2019 - present
Darren's recent artwork is inspired by his decades long career as an outsider deep within the fashion industry. Combining French acrylics, Hermes and Gucci wallpapers and vintage magazines, the critically acclaimed designer and producer has created works that homage the enigmatic and magical world of fashion- past, present and future. Darren's love/ hate relationship with the industry, he was deeply immersed in, brings to the canvas a visual dialogue that confronts fashion’s waste and pretension with its artistry, beauty, and relevance. The result are works bursting with color, contradiction and a nostalgic futurism.
Deconstructing the concepts of woven fabric and the cages we find ourselves in, whether self imposed or by society are ideas Darren is developing. Darren finds inspiration in a wealth of materials, from flora and botanical interests to graphic design, layered patterns, prints and textures. His use of color is boisterous and bold, brimming with hope and fury.
Rather than name each work in this collection, Darren, in an ode to fashion, simply numbers each piece — like the looks/ exits from a runway presentation.
